Clothes Aid raises £1m for Macmillan from donated clothes
Unwanted clothes that have been donated via clothes collection company Clothes Aid have raised over £1 million for Macmillan Cancer Support in just two years.
The licensed commercial collection company has in the process prevented over four million garments from being sent to landfill. But they know that they could raise even more: every year an estimated £140 million worth of unwanted clothing is thrown away in the UK, according to WRAP’s 2012 report, Valuing our Clothes.
Macmillan have produced an infographic to demonstrate the scale of the Clothes Aid collection and what it means for the charity. For example, the clothing was donated in over 200,000 plastic bags, and if all the garments were hung on a washing line it would stretch for 1,941 miles, or from Rugby to Rome and back.
The money raised could pay for 19 Macmillan nurses for a year, the equivalent of 37,038 nursing hours.
Will Gogerty, Partnership Development Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said:
“Everyone at Macmillan is delighted to reaching the £1million mark, thanks to the kind donations from our supporters and everyone at Clothes Aid”.
