‘Global Fundraising’ book wins AFP Research Prize
‘Global Fundraising: How the World is Changing the Rules of Philanthropy’ by Bernard Ross and Penelope Cagney has been awarded the Skystone Partners Prize for Research by America’s Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
The book, published by Wiley, is one of the first to focus on global fundraising, examining how the globalisation of fundraising is affecting philanthropy. It features contributions from 25 international fundraisers, covering fundraising practices and trends in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East & North Africa, Asia, India, Japan, China, Central & Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Australia & New Zealand, and North America.
First European to win AFP’s research prize
The Skystone Prize is awarded to authors of books that contribute substantially to the knowledge and understanding of fundraising or philanthropic behaviour. It was set up with an endowment by Skystone Partners, the international fundraising consulting firm.
Bernard Ross, MD of The Management Centre, the management consultancy and training organisation, is the first non-American to receive the prize in its 25 year history.
His co-author, Penelope Cagney, is principal of The Cagney Company.
Ross commented:
“It’s really wonderful to be able to bring our research to the international fundraising community through programmes such as the Skystone Prize, and I am incredibly proud of the recognition this awards Global Fundraising.
“I would like to acknowledge and thank all of our contributors without which the book wouldn’t have been possible; especially fellow Management Centre associates – director Angela Cluff who wrote the chapter on Major Donors, and Mike Muchilwa, Masa Uo and Usha Menon.”

Why the book won
Elizabeth Kohler Knuppel, managing partner for Skystone Partners, said:
“Penelope Cagney and Bernard Ross are two of the premier thought leaders on philanthropy and fundraising, and their volume is a critical addition to the profession, especially as fundraising grows dramatically in countries around the world.”
Announcing the 2015 winner, AFP’s Research Council, which reviews many volumes every year and awards the prize, wrote of Global Fundraising:
“By sharing data, practices, and results from around the world, this book is certain to deliver thought-provoking ideas to fundraisers regardless of where they may work. In keeping with AFP’s research prize qualifications and criteria, Global Fundraising is an outstanding contribution to the field.”
The Skystone Partners Prize for Research will be presented to the authors at AFP’s board meeting on 28 March in Baltimore, before its 52nd International Fundraising Conference.
