Oxfam and CAF work with Zapp on mobile donations

Howard Lake | 4 September 2014 | News

Mobile payment provider Zapp is working with the Charities Aid Foundation and Oxfam GB to enable people to donate to charity via their mobile phone using their bank account.
Zapp will allow donors to give via their banking application on their phone, meaning that the money will come from donors’ bank accounts, rather than phone bills. This means that they won’t need to input credit or debit card payment details. Also, donors will be able to see their bank account balances at the point of donating and choose which account to give from. This should help them manage their gifts more effectively.

Which banks?

Zapp has already partnered with HSBC, first direct, Nationwide, Santander and Metro Bank, so one third of all UK bank accounts will soon be able to function with Zapp.
Zapp is part of the VocaLink group of companies. The UK payments provider processed over 10 billion UK payments with a value of over £4.5 trillion.
Zapp was unable to confirm what transaction costs would be for charities. However, it commissioned research from the Centre for Economic and Business Research which revealed that “shifting from cash, credit and charge cards to mobile payments could have saved retailers £463 million in lower transaction costs in 2013”.
Matt Jerwood, Digital Fundraising Lead, Oxfam, said:

“Oxfam is always interested in innovations that offer new ways for supporters to engage with us. We look forward to investigating how this new technology may offer a new channel for receiving donations and make life easier for our supporters.”
