Theft from Maggie’s centre meets with rapid influx of donations

Maggie’s cancer centre in Nottingham has been burgled, just hours after it had held a successful fundraising summer fair on Sunday. Thieves stole cash raised at the fair plus other donations in a safe, together with computer equipment. In total, the thieves took £6,000.
This wasn’t the first time that the charity had been targeted by thieves. Four computers were stolen from them in August 2012.
However, following an appeal by the Nottingham Post, donations of £5,600 including Gift Aid have been received by people keen to help the charity. This includes one donation of £3,000 from a former Nottinghamshire resident who now lives in Japan and who read about the theft online.
Fundraising Manager Laura Grant told the Nottingham Post:

“We are overwhelmed by the support in the community. It goes towards restoring faith in human nature at an awful time. On Monday we struggled to make sense of it but the response has been phenomenal.”

She has set up a JustGiving page to enable people to donate to the charity.
