HMRC achieves gold for payroll giving

Howard Lake | 25 June 2014 | News

Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has once again achieved the Gold Quality Mark for its success in promoting payroll giving to its employees. This is the six year in a row that it has achieved this award, according to The Association of Payroll Giving Organisations (APGO).
To achieve Gold status in the Payroll Giving Quality Marks an employer must achieve a level of at least 10% of employees giving via this tax-effective method. HMRC has beaten this figure.
The announcement was made in the week that the Home Office is hosting the annual Payroll Giving conference. APGO hopes it will encourage other government departments to increase levels of staff giving by payroll giving even more.
Given HMRC’s role in tax-effective fundraising, its achievements in payroll giving amongst its staff are inevitably going to attract more scrutiny than those of other companies.
Harriet Stevens from HMRC said:

“We are delighted at the response from our staff in signing up to Payroll Giving, enabling us to achieve the Gold Quality Mark, thereby raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for more than 1300 charities throughout the UK last year.  As the Government Department at the forefront of tax-effective fundraising we are proud to be taking the lead in this way.”

Panikos Efthimiou, Chair of the APGO, congratulated HMRC, saying:

“At a time when the results of the recent Government consultation on Payroll Giving are now being implemented HMRC demonstrate very clearly a commitment to get more of their staff giving to charity in this way”.

He added:

“We would encourage all Government departments to try and follow where HMRC lead”.
