12th edition of The Guide to Educational Grants published

The Directory of Social Change has published The Guide to Educational Grants 2013/14, a detailed list of sources of non-statutory help and other support available for people in education or training. All levels of education are covered, up to and including first degree level.

The tenth edition of The Guide to Educational Grants 2013/14 covers nearly 1,500 trusts and foundations which give a total of over £54 million a year in grants to individuals.

In researching the latest edition, Directory of Social Change researchers found that applications to educational charitable trusts for financial support had risen, yet many trusts had experienced a drop in income as a result of the recession. Further and Higher education students and schoolchildren are particularly affected due to the escalating costs of higher education, the scrapping of Education Maintenance Allowance and the decline in statutory school uniform grants.

Lucy Lernelius-Tonks, DSC researcher and author of the guide said: "This forces us to consider if it is right that trusts should step in and do their best to fill the gaps, as state support for education rolls back? Is the government taking enough responsibility for making sure that a lack of money does not act as a barrier to education and training?"
