Irish will week launched

Howard Lake | 14 October 2012 | News

The Best Will in the World Week gets underway in Ireland in a week’s time, running from 22 to 26 October, promoting both making a will and leaving a gift to charity. Over 200 solicitors across Ireland will offer will consultations for €50 during the week.

Those interested in making or updating an existing will will be encouraged to leave a gift to their favourite charity in their will after loved ones have been looked after.

Will writing and charitable bequests in Ireland

Only 34% of people living in Ireland have made a will according to research commissioned for MyLegacy, which was established in 2003 to promote charitable bequests and now has a membership of over 70 Irish charities.

The most recent research on wills shows that the situation has not changed substantially in nearly six years. The research shows that only 51% of those aged between 45 and 64 years of age have a will, although 82% of those over 65 years have a will.

The research also found that just over 30% of respondents said that they would like to make a donation to charity in their will. This certainly represents progress as it is a 100% increase on the number of respondents who said they would in the research conducted in May 2006.
