Irish charities consortium launches tax-effective giving campaign

Howard Lake | 6 January 2012 | News

An independent steering group of charity fundraisers supported by the Irish Charities Tax Reform Group (ICTRG) has launched a Taxback Campaign to encourage more donors to make their donations qualify for tax rebate. The campaign by a consortium of charities aims to boost income for charities at no extra cost to the donors.
The group points out that “the proportion of €250+ donors who return their CHY 2 forms to most charities is less than the proportion of PAYE taxpayers in the general public”. It suggests that this might be because of inertia, uncertainty about whether Taxback applies to them, or concern that it might affect their tax affairs.
The campaign will run across various media in March 2012 when many charities send their annual tax mailings to supporters.
The ICTRG is encouraging charities to sign up and support the campaign by contributing to its budget. The steering group points out that if the campaign is successful “this will produce a positive return on investment from contributing charities in the same year as the spend”.
