Star Wars™ Gold Heart badge to raise funds for Variety

Howard Lake | 7 February 2012 | News

Children’s charity Variety is raising funds by selling a Star Wars Gold Heart badge in partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd. The badge features C-3PO and R2-D2.
The badge marks the 21st anniversary of the charity’s Gold Heart Appeal on behalf of children and young people who are sick, disabled and disadvantaged. It also coincides with the release on 9 February of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode I -The Phantom Menace in 3D. The appeal is supported by actor Anthony Daniels, who played C-3PO in all six Star Wars films.
The badge is available for £1 at selected cinemas and retailers across the UK, including H Samuel, Odeon Cinemas and Leeds Building Society.

Variety’s Gold Heart Appeal

Since 1991, Variety’s Gold Heart Appeal has been the charity’s main campaign in the UK and worldwide. In recent years Variety has worked with major film companies, including Paramount, DreamWorks, and Warner Bros. to design a special edition badge, based on a universally recognised film, character or celebrity that is sold primarily in selected cinemas, venues and retailers across the U.K. The appeal has raised more than £20 million so far.

Anthony Daniels: C-3PO does have a heart

Anthony Daniels said: “In spite of Han Solo’s opinion, that golden droid, C-3PO, has been doing his very best to take care of humans in a distant galaxy for the last 35 years. Now I’m delighted to direct his efforts towards helping some younger humans have a better time on our planet.”
He added: “I’ve always wondered if C-3PO had a heart. Well, he does now!”
