Community or club to win £1000 to lead UK's switch-off for Earth Hour

WWF is running a nationwide competition to find one community which will be given the honour of leading the Earth Hour switch-off in the UK. The winning community will win a £1,000 grant to make sure that their ‘switched off’ event goes with a bang. Entries for the prize are being invited from schools, workplaces, streets, villages, pubs and clubs.
The annual event, which asks communities around the world to turn off their lights at home for just an hour, will take place on 31 March 2012.
The winner will lead the switch-off at 8.30pm, and will then be followed by major landmarks like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Edinburgh Castle, as well as many other homes and venues across the country.
To stand a chance of being selected as WWF’s Champion Community for 2012, you need to explain in no more than 300 words why your community should lead the switch off.
The £1000 grant is complemented by £300 prizes for national winners in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
WWF’s Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses joined in. Last year hundreds of millions of people and landmarks from Big Ben and Buckingham Palace in London to the India Gate in New Delhi and The Sydney Opera House took part.
