JD Wetherspoon toasts another five years supporting young people with cancer
Award-winning pub chain JD Wetherspoon has renewed its hugely successful corporate partnership with CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, by announcing a new target of raising £1 million a year for the next five years. John Hutson, JD Wetherspoon Chief Executive, was joined by CLIC Sargent Patron and sports presenter Steve Rider at the company’s headquarters in Watford on Thursday 3 March 2011 to mark the occasion.
The first year of the partnership will focus on CLIC Sargent’s commitment to improving the lives of young people with cancer. JD Wetherspoon is supporting CLIC Sargent to make sure that every young person who has cancer – or has survived cancer – is given the opportunity to have the best chance in life.
Nineteen-year-old Ayesha from Plymouth is one of a number of young people aged 18 to 24 years old being given the chance to get involved in the renewed partnership over the next 12 months. Ayesha had the opportunity to gain valuable work experience through the making of a short film about her experiences of being diagnosed with cancer as a teenager.
Steve Rider, Patron of CLIC Sargent and sports presenter, says: “I’m delighted that JD Wetherspoon’s staff and customers will be supporting CLIC Sargent for a further five years, with an impressive aim to raise £1million each year. The commitment shown by all at JD Wetherspoon, whether it’s putting spare change in a collection bucket on the bar or pulling on their trainers to run the Virgin London Marathon, is inspiring.
I wish them all the best in hitting the fundraising target – their support is vital to help CLIC Sargent meet the many needs of young people with cancer.”
JD Wetherspoon staff, customers and their local communities have been supporting CLIC Sargent since 2002, raising £4 million to help improve the lives of young people and children with cancer, across the UK.
John Hutson, Chief Executive of JD Wetherspoon, says: “I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to our dedicated staff and customers who have fundraised tirelessly over the past eight years to help families affected by childhood cancer. Supporting CLIC Sargent has become an integral part of JD Wetherspoon’s culture and we’re excited to be relaunching our partnership with the charity.”
Fundraising activities, in pubs and at the company’s head office in Watford, range from sports auctions and cycle rides to the nationwide five-a-side staff football tournament, Kick for CLIC Sargent and ‘Team Wetherspoon’, a group of 20 employees who ran the 2010 Virgin London Marathon for CLIC Sargent. Staff are already busy planning events across the UK to count towards the new fundraising target including a trek up Ben Nevis in Scotland, pyjama parties and a pub quiz.
Lucy Caldicott, Director of Fundraising at CLIC Sargent says: “JD Wetherspoon is a really committed corporate partner and we’re delighted to have the company’s support for another five years. Thank you for all your efforts and here’s to the next five years!”
