Google’s Christmas gift to Lasa

Howard Lake | 23 December 2010 | News

Google has chosen technology and advice charity Lasa as one of 10 nonprofit organisations to receive a share of $20 million this Christmas.
The award is designed to recognise the charity’s work in promoting better practice in the third sector. Over the last 26 years, Lasa has supported thousands of third sector organisations and community groups with advice, training and resources. Its Rightsnet (www.rightsnet.org.uk) site provides valuable behind-the-scenes support to frontline welfare organisations, and its ICT Knowledgebase provides a range of free technology resources.
Terry Stokes, Chief Executive of Lasa said: “This acknowledges the work we do in helping the sector make good decisions about technology and is an amazing Christmas present both for Lasa and the charities we support. Google’s generous donation means Lasa can continue to provide much-needed technology and social welfare law support for charities in the UK, despite the challenges the economy has presented to all of us”.
Google’s founders set a target of giving approximately 1% of Google’s equity and profits “to make the world a better place”. In Spreading holiday cheer with charitable donations, the company said that “We will exceed our 2010 target this year with charitable giving, with more than $145 million going to non-profits and academic institutions, and more than $184 million in total giving when including Google Grants, Google.org technology projects and product support for non-profits”.
Other beneficiaries of a share of the $20 million include UNICEF, Ashoka, NTEN, and APC.
