Running shoes with extra power

Sue Ryder Care is calling runners across the country to join its running team. The health and social care charity offers a personalised service to all runners who have secured their own place at one of the most popular half-marathon races – the Great North Run – and would like extra help to make sure the day will be an unforgettable one.
Fiona Chilton, Running and Challenge Events Coordinator at Sue Ryder Care, commented: “The race is fast approaching – it takes place on Sunday 19 September – and if you have not thought about running for a charity, there is still plenty of time to join our running team. We are here to help you with training advice and tips, all runners also receive a running vest. On the day we will be there to support you all the way through the race with our fantastic ‘cheering team’ and after the race with our in-house physiotherapists to soothe those aching muscles”.
Sue Ryder Care has a dedicated running support team and look after its runners from the sign-up to the finishing line. David Procter, who took place in last year’s event, added: “I wanted to take on the challenge of the Great North Run and see how far I could get. I have run it in the past, but I never thought of running the race for a charity.
To be part of the Sue Ryder Care team was a great experience. I was unsure about raising money as I have always imagined it was difficult and time consuming. But it was quite easy and definitely good fun. I ended up involving work colleagues, family and friends and we all had a great time organising fundraising events whenever we had some spare time. The support I received from the Sue Ryder Care team was fantastic and it was the main reason I had gone from ‘never again’ to ‘ I can’t wait for next year’. I will recommend to anyone who has a place at the race to get in touch with the running team at Sue Ryder Care, it makes the experience a very special one”.
All money raised through sponsorships help the charity continue to provide quality care for people living with end of life and long-term conditions including Cancer, Stroke, Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Huntington’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease through its day care, respite, residential and community based services.
Sue Ryder Care has a partnership with www.virginmoneygiving.com so runners can create their own online fundraising page, making it easy for friends and family to sponsor them.
