Money from America

Howard Lake | 16 July 2009 | News

Foundations based in America provided grants in Ireland totalling $2.5 million in 2008, according to the Foundation Center which monitors foundation grant giving.

The figure is twice the grant level in 2007 when the figure was $1.2 million. The largest grant last year was $1.125 million to the University of Limerick from Atlantic Philanthropies. The next biggest grant was $333,000 to the Irish Youth Foundation, with the smallest $15,000 to Ballinglen Arts Foundation. In all, there were thirteen recipients of grants in Ireland recorded in the Foundation Center database.

Foundation grant giving to Ireland is considerably less than the figure for England where in 2008 grants totalling $110 million were provided. The largest recipient in England was the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine which received $30 million from the Gates Foundation.
