Brian Burnie and the Burnie Family Charitable Trust

I have read a few articles recently about the plans of Brian Burnie to sell his hotel (Doxford Hall Hotel in Alnwick), and use the proceeds to establish a grant-making trust to donate money to local charities in the north east of England, via the Burnie Family Charitable Trust. This is admirable stuff, and something that many fundraisers and prospect researchers will want to monitor. Burnie hopes that this will encourage other people to donate money in the same way. However, things are not quite so straightforward as the articles suggest.

www.bighospitality.co.uk reports that Brian Burnie has asked for someone to buy the hotel so that he can fulfil his dream. In these troubled times, he seems to be experiencing some difficulty selling the hotel. Well, that is hardly surprising, I guess. Apparently, there have been a few approaches, but more are required.

I cannot see the Burnie Family Charitable Trust on the Charity Commission register, nor on the Scottish Charity Register, but then what is the hurry. Slightly surprisingly, none of the articles that I have read make any mention of the Burnie family’s existing grant-making trust. The Doxford Hall Charitable Trust supports local charities in the north east of England, and the trustees are Mr Brian Thomas Burnie and Mrs June Shirley Burnie.
