Foresters Friendly Society donates £47,000 to CLIC Sargent

Howard Lake | 14 November 2008 | Newswire

Foresters Friendly Society has announced that fundraising activities undertaken by its members to support CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity, raised a total of £47,000 between September 2007 and September 2008.

CLIC Sargent was selected by John Levett as the Society’s nominated charity during his year in office as the Society’s President, the High Chief Ranger, which came to an end at the Society’s annual High Court meeting, staged last month in Scarborough.

The fundraising programme was supported by members of the Foresters Friendly Society’s 250 UK branches accompanied by major events including a charity dinner hosted by John Levett aboard HMS Warrior in Portsmouth in June 2008.

CLIC Sargent is the children’s cancer charity helping children and young people with cancer and their families with the trauma of diagnosis, the often long journey through treatment and continuing to support them afterwards. CLIC Sargent spends approximately £3,500 per child it supports.

Kevin Dann CEO at Foresters Friendly Society, said; “As a mutual organisation dedicated to looking after the interests and well-being of our members since 1834 we’re naturally committed to lending our support to the work of charities such as CLIC Sargent which work tirelessly to support those who are experiencing times of hardship, illness or challenge.

Kevin Dann continued “We’re pleased that our members have been able to help make a real difference to CLIC Sargent’s fundraising efforts during 2007 and 2008.

This success reflects the genuine sense of community spirit shared by our members, who also benefit from the ready-made social network and infrastructure we are able to offer them.”

The funds raised by members of the Foresters Friendly Society will be used to support a range of CLIC Sargent services, including Homes from Home, a scheme which provides free self-catering accommodation to families of children and young people affected by cancer and undergoing treatment outside their home area.

Ann Cooper, Community Fundraising Manager for CLIC Sargent added: “On behalf of CLIC Sargent I would like to thank members of the Foresters Friendly Society who have enthusiastically fundraised for us over the past year. The money raised will make a real difference to families whose lives have been turned upside down by childhood cancer. Right now we can only help two out of three families whose child has cancer. We need help from organisations like the Foresters Friendly Society to be there…for each and every one.”

There are 3,600 new cases of cancer in children and young people throughout the UK every year. CLIC Sargent currently supports 2,400 of these. CLIC Sargent is aiming to increase its services to enable it to meet the needs of all children and young people diagnosed with cancer.
