NCVO changes its strapline

Howard Lake | 25 November 2007 | News

NCVO has changed its strapline, adopting a shorter and broader description for the groups that it aims to serve.

Previously the umbrella body’s strapline stated that it was “giving voice and support to voluntary and community organisations”. Now that has been shortened to “giving voice and support to civil society”.

In an announcement on the front page of the organisation’s website, NCVO said that “the new strapline emphasises the voluntary and community sector’s role as a catalyst for collective action, dialogue and debate in order to transform peoples’ lives for the better”.

It has always been difficult to sum up the sector. ‘Third sector’, ‘voluntary and community sector’, and ‘charity sector’ are just some of the phrases in use. These have been added to by the import of ‘nonprofit sector’ from the USA, and its relative ‘not-for-profit’ sector. ‘Civil society’ is one of the broader terms in that it can include social businesses, philanthropists, and campaigning organisations, as well as traditional charities. It was particularly common during the 1990s, especially in relation to the funding and development of organisations in Eastern Europe.
