CARE launches £2.5 million appeal for South Asia floods

Howard Lake | 8 August 2007 | News

International aid agency CARE International has launched a £2.5 million appeal to provide relief in South Asia where flooding has affected almost 35 million people.

The money CARE raises will help nearly a quarter of a million people across the region. The £2.5 million raised will help cover immediate emergency aid, as well as long-term recovery and rehabilitation work that will follow. CARE is providing emergency relief in Pakistan, Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.

“Many of these people were already poor and now they have lost their homes, crops and possessions. It is going to take long-term support to get them back on their feet,” said Jon Mitchell, CARE International’s Emergency Response Director.

Oxfam has also launched an appeal for £1 million for its work to help nearly 500,000 flood victims in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The money will be spent on delivering food, emergency shelter, hygiene items and clean water and safe sanitation.
