Abbey pledges over £1 million to national and local charities

Howard Lake | 17 July 2007 | News

Personal financial services company Abbey has announced two three-year funding commitments to the Princess Royal Trust for Carers and Shelter.

Through Abbey’s Charitable Trust, five charities will each receive £150,000 over a three-year period. This new development in the annual donations programme, representing a total contribution of £750,000, will, for the first time, allow Abbey to offer long-term funding commitments. Abbey will be announcing the three remaining partnerships for 2007 later in the year.

The Abbey Charitable Trust approached charities working on projects aligned with its three priority areas which seek to help disadvantaged people through; education and training, financial advice and community regeneration.

Abbey has also committed a further £375,000 to smaller, local charities to be allocated via 150 branch nominations. These will also be made to charities working on projects aligned with the priority areas. The donations form part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Abbey’s parent company, Santander.

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers will be using the grant to develop a financial literacy programme for carers and Shelter will be funding financial advice projects in Liverpool and East London.

Alan Eagle, Abbey’s Charitable Trust manager, said: “The Charitable Trust gave over £2 million to charities in 2006 and we are well on the way to exceeding that total this year. We’re delighted to be able to offer longer term funding partnerships such as these which we hope will create an even bigger impact among the communities they are aiming to help. We are planning to create five further partnerships next year and charities working on projects that meet the priority areas are invited to get in contact.”
