The British & International Sailors’ Society’s Woolly Hat Week 2006 yielded 7,000 woolly hats to seafarers in need. This response has enabled the charity not only to provide additional Christmas parcels and hats to seafarers visiting the UK, but hats are now being sent regularly to BISS Port Chaplains in Antwerp, Russia and the Ukraine for distribution.

B.I.S.S. is now launching Woolly Hat Week 2007 which runs from 4 – 10 February. Knitters are encouraged to knit and donate hats for seafarers and the charity also encourages companies to take part in Wear Your Woolly Hat To Work Week.

Women’s Institute branches have been particularly supportive. Avon W.I. for example have contributed more than800 hats.

The Saga Ruby and Saga Rose will also be supporting the initiative by selling gift knitting packs and hand-knitted hats on board their ships during their Christmas and World cruises.
