ChildLine marks 20th birthday with £20 million appeal

After helping nearly two million children and young people since it was founded 20 years ago on 30 October 1986, ChildLine is marking its anniversary with a renewed call to the public to help raise £20 million to enable the helpline to support an extra 1000 children a day.

The UK’s free, confidential 24 hour helpline for children and young people was launched on 30 October 1986. Its success over the past 20 years has led to similar initiatives in dozens of countries, such as Gibraltar, India and the Czech Republic.

Of the 4,500 children who call each day, around 2,000 are unable to get through to the help they need. The aim of the appeal is to increase the proportion of children’s calls answered from 57% cent to 80% and to double the number of volunteer counsellors who can help children who call. This will mean helping another 1,000 children every day.
