StreetSmart launches ninth restaurant campaign for homeless

Howard Lake | 26 October 2006 | News

StreetSmart is a pioneering dining event raising money for homeless people and returns to the nation’s restaurants for the ninth time in November and December.

During the two months a voluntary £1 per table is added to diners’ bills in participating restaurants, of which there are more than 550 from Brighton to Edinburgh. Famous names supporting the campaign include Gordon Ramsay, Antony Worrall Thompson, Fergus Hdnerson and Giorgio Locatelli and restaurant groups such as Contran, Harvey Nichols and Claudio Pulze are also taking part, as well as a large number of independent restaurants.

The event raised £434,000 last year and has notched up more than £2m since its inception. Administration costs are covered by sponsors Deutsche Bank and Marks & Spencer.

All the homeless projects that receive funds are carefully selected and visited by at least one StreetSmart representative. Funding is given for basics such as shelter, sustenance and a shower and also to help support people to rebuild their lives.
