Old Mobiles = Money For Students & Charity

Howard Lake | 17 November 2006 | News

With 90 million old mobiles lying gathering dust in drawers and cupboards across the country it doesn’t take a genius to work out that there is a problem with disposing of them. Recycling experts Redeem have teamed up with the student mobile service Dot Mobile to create a solution that will give students a bit of cash in their pockets thanks to their new recycling programme which allows customers to exchange their old mobiles for up to £100.
The new service means that students can trade-in their old handsets and receive a cheque to spend on whatever they please – new mobile, new text books, new wardrobe… They can even donate their cash from their mobiles to charity. Dot Mobile is working with Kids Company, a children’s charity dedicated to helping vulnerable children on an emotional and practical level. All they have to do is get hold of a freepost envelope from a member of the dot crew on campus, by visiting www.dotmobile.co.uk/recycle or by calling 0870 350 1853.
Not only will students be able to earn cash and help a worthwhile cause they can give themselves a pat on the back for benefiting the environment at the same time. When old mobiles are thrown in the bin they end up in landfill sites around the country where the toxic chemicals they contain can leak into the surrounding soil causing pollution and damaging plant and wildlife. There is also unwelcome activity at the top of the site where the decomposing waste produces the harmful greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane. By recycling and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill means we are doing our bit for climate change too.
