One lucky charity could be £20,000 richer if the winner of the World Strip Poker Championships donates their winnings to a good cause.

An event that started life as an April Fool’s joke could raise £20,000 for one lucky charity.

The World Strip Poker Championship is due to take place in London on 19 August with the organiser – bookmaker Paddy Power – pledging to double the £10,000 first prize if the winner donates their winnings to a UK charity.

The Championship is an attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the largest ever strip poker tournament and players have signed up from 15 countries.

The idea came from a press release sent out on 1 April, but within minutes the company had received phone calls and emails from individuals and organisations wanting more details.

Paddy Power says the event, at the Café Royal, will be held in a comfortable environment. It has 13 specific rules that have to be followed to the letter and the company says it has had to consider the significant logistical difficulties of hundreds of people disrobing, make sure hygiene isn’t compromised and ensure everyone understands the correct etiquette for the game.

Otherwise there could be more than cards on the table.
