New charity commission takes shape
The Northern Ireland Department of Social Development has outlined the probable make up of the regulatory body which will police charities in Northern Ireland in its charity review consultation document. The DSD is inviting comments on its proposals, which will lead to new legislation, up to 13th October.
The Department is proposing that the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland will have an annual budget of £800,000, with a part time Chief Charity Commissioner, a deputy and 3-5 commissioners. The staff of the commission will include a chief executive and 12 staff.
The commission will have three functional areas — register, investigation and support. An additional £300,000 is estimated for the start up costs of the organisation.

The new legislation is designed to bring Northern Ireland into line with Britain where charities and fundraising practice are regulated by a charity commission.
