Cancer Research UK teams up with Sir Digby Jones on new fundraising initiative

Howard Lake | 8 June 2006 | Newswire

Cancer Research UK has joined forces with outgoing CBI Director-General Sir Digby Jones to develop a new Corporate Board for the charity.
Sir Digby will chair the Corporate Board which will be made up of ‘corporate ambassadors’ from the business sector. These senior business people will help Cancer Research UK widen its network of contacts in the corporate world with the ultimate aim of engaging businesses in raising money for the charity.
The first task for Sir Digby, working in conjunction with Cancer Research UK, will be the recruitment of the ambassadors. The ambassadors will come from a cross section of businesses and be able to introduce the vital work of the charity to new corporate audiences.
Sir Digby Jones has helped to raise funds for Cancer Research UK for a number of years. In 2005 he took part in the Flora London Marathon for Cancer Research UK and, to-date, has raised £100,000 to help fund the charity’s research.
Commenting on the initiative and his support of Cancer Research UK, Sir Digby said: I am thrilled to be asked to chair the charity’s Corporate Board. Few people are unaffected by cancer in their lives and the business community will, I know, get even more deeply involved in beating it. As I move on from the CBI I shall be doing many different things but none will be more important than this.”
Sarah Lyness, Co-Executive Director of Fundraising & Marketing for Cancer Research UK, added: We believe there is a real opportunity to significantly grow the funds that Cancer Research UK receives from the corporate sector. We want to increase the corporate income contribution to our vital work to over £20 million in five years. We’re really excited about working with Sir Digby and believe that his support will help us raise the funds needed to continue our vital work into preventing, treating and curing cancer.”
