Architects 'open door' for homeless

Howard Lake | 25 April 2006 | News

The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) and the Simon Communities of Ireland have joined forces for a unique fundraising initiative called Simon Open Door. RIAI architects around the country will open their offices on Saturday May 27, 2006, to give members of the public an hour’s private consultation in return for a ‚€50 donation to Simon.

All participating architects are giving their time for free and every cent raised will go directly to the Simon Communities.

The Simon Open Door initiative will give members of the public the chance to get informal professional advice on how best to develop their dream building project whether it’s building a house, adding an extension or creating more living space. They will have the added bonus of helping to provide homes for those who need them most.

Last year the initiative raised over ‚€25,000 and the RIAI and Simon hope to meet and exceed that figure in 2006.

Ellie O’Donnell, National Fundraiser, Simon Communities of Ireland, said Open Door was an interesting fundraising model, with all transactions, including booking the consultation at local level and paying the fee, undertaken on the site www.simonopendoor.ie.
