New look for Brainwave website

The growing international children’s charity Brainwave has a refreshed and updated presence online, with its new look www.brainwave.org.uk website, sponsored by the Lincoln Financial Group. Somerset-based Brainwave offers therapy for brain injured and special needs children and since 1982 over 1500 brain injured children and their families have been supported by the charity.
The website is often the first place that parents will look for information and support. It offers an insight into how Brainwave’s home based programme of exercises has enabled many hundreds of children to achieve developmental milestones beyond their families’ and doctors’ expectations. It illustrates the charity’s success stories, contains information on the facilities and resources that Brainwave uses and provides information on the various diagnoses and conditions for which Brainwave can provide help.
Brainwave’s therapy programmes are based on the principle that all brain injured children, and others with a wide range of disorders, can improve their level of development provided the correct stimulation is provided.
The children come to Brainwave with a variety of problems ranging from brain injury to Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, chromosomal abnormalities, genetic disorders and global development delay.
The families are invited to Brainwave’s Centre for an initial assessment, which takes two days. During that time therapists take a full socio-medical history and carry out an assessment on the child. This enables appropriate exercises to be designed that during the second day are taught to the parents.
On returning home they practice those same exercises with their child for up to 10 hours per week, often with support from friends and relations. Every four months the family is invited to return and the Centre staff re-assess the child for progress and adapt the exercises accordingly. The programme may continue over several years in order to help the child reach maximum independence.
Staff working at Brainwave’s Centre have backgrounds in physiotherapy, teaching, psychology and social services and use a multifaceted approach to overcome the developmental difficulties associated with the child’s disorder.
Senior Therapy Officer, Philip Edge stresses: “It is not our intention to replace those services already accessed from local mainstream providers but to add value to what the families are already receiving.“
