Songs for Sudan - album cover for Oxfam

The days of the charity single are probably behind us, but Oxfam is keeping up with the times by releasing an album exclusively online to raise funds for its work in Darfur, Sudan.

The ‘Songs for Sudan’ album includes tracks from Faithless, Badly Drawn Boy, David Gray, and R.E.M. All artists and record companies are donating their services at no charge.

The album costs £7.99 of which £5 goes to the Oxfam Sudan appeal. The download-only album ensures that distribution costs are non-existent so more of the cover price can be credited to Oxfam.

The ability to produce an album and distribute it in this rapid and low-cost fashion means this won’t be the last online charity single.

Sadly the single probably won’t reach its maximum potential. The Big Noise Music download site can only be used if you are using Internet Explorer 6.0 and a PC. Try it using Firefox for example or on a Mac and you get a polite message explaining that “your computer is not correctly configured to access” the site.
