An online campaign to raise funds for a newspaper advert promoting the open source Firefox Web browser in Europe has raised over ‚€48,000.

The income was used to publish a full-page advert in the business section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Germany on 2 December 2004. The advert was the first publicly-funded advert for open source software in Europe.

The online campaign secured donations from 2,403 people, and exceeded its target by ‚€10,000. This surplus was donated to Mozilla Europe, the European affiliate of the Mozilla Foundation.

The European appeal follows a US campaign in October 2004 which raised over $250,000 online in 10 days to pay for an advert in the New York Times.
