Co-op Bank customers vote to support Bhopal Medical Appeal

Howard Lake | 3 December 2004 | News

On the 20th anniversary of the disaster in India, Co-operative Bank customers have voted overwhelmingly to support the Bhopal Medical Appeal.

As part of its Customers Who Care Safer Chemicals Campaign, The Co-operative Bank invited account holders to vote for one of five charities that they would like to receive a donation.

Almost half (48%) of customers chose the Bhopal Medical Appeal (BMA) while 19% opted for The Soil Association, 14% voted for HDRA The Organic Association, 11% chose Allergy UK, and 8% supported the Women’s Environmental Network. The bank’s donations will be divided between the five charities according to the percentage of votes received.

The actual amount of money is based on the amount of money spent on all Co-operative Bank Visa credit and debit cards between 1 October and 31 December 2004. For every £100 spent on the cards the bank will donate 1.25 pence. Last year the Bank’s Customers Who Care campaign donated £100,000 to selected charities.
