Lake District authority asks fundraisers to cut back on hillwalking events

Howard Lake | 25 November 2004 | News

Lakeland Today reports that the Lake District National Park Authority has appealed to fundraisers to take a break from organising Three Peaks Challenges.

Area Ranger manager Sara Clarke told Lakeland Today that, although there is a code of conduct on such events, the increasing popularity of fundraising events in the Lake District “has annoyed local residents and further damaged routes up to England’s highest mountain – Scafell.”

She encouraged fundraisers to be more creative in choosing alternative ways to raise funds. “Perhaps have a break from the Three Peaks Challenge for a year or two and look at other ways money can be raised through enjoyable outdoor events,” she said.

If this were not possible then she recommended that such events do at least adhere to the Code of Practice set out by the Institute of Fundraising and the UK’s National Parks.
