Environmental charity Thames21 has been selected as official charity for The Boat Race 2006. The charity’s volunteers work to clean up London’s rivers and canals and create habitats for wildlife.

The partnership includes a clean up with the Oxford and Cambridge boat race crews and local community, a guided walk along the route of the Boat Race, and an educational event with local schools.

Thames21 estimates that it will raise at least £10,000 from the partnership, and will expand its volunteer base.

This year’s race takes place on Sunday 2 April 2006, and regularly attracts over 140 million television viewers worldwide as well as an average of 250,000 spectators each year.

Howard Jacobs, London Representative of the University Boat Clubs said: “We have decided to make Thames21 our official charity because The Boat Race has ties with the Thames which go back over 150 years. The event and the river are synonymous.”
