‘Chugger’ enters common parlance according to OUP

“Chugger”, the pejorative term for a face to face street fundraiser, has been included as a new word that has entered common usage according to Oxford University Press’ latest edition of “The Language Report”.

The word “chugger”, short for “charity mugger”, is not going to go away, it seems. It has been included in “Larpers and Shroomers: The Language Report”, by Susie Dent, the dictionary expert on TV’s ‘Countdown’, as a new word that has become established. It could therefore be on its way to appearing in future dictionaries.

Drawing on the resources of Oxford’s dictionaries, The Language Report examines the newest words in the language, explores how the language is changing, and looks at the influence of current events, technology, TV, and the media on everyday vocabulary.
