Beslan Lifeline Appeal set up by Charities Aid Foundation

Howard Lake | 6 September 2004 | News

Following last week’s terrorist attacks in Beslan, Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in Russia has set up the Beslan Lifeline Appeal to support local Russian hospitals and non-profit organisations already working with the people of the region.

Income from the appeal will be used by CAF in Russia to provide grants to hospitals, medical charities and educational organisations working in Beslan. The grants will not only support the immediate need of families affected by the tragedy, but they will also support the needs of the community in the long term.

CAF itself has provided initial funding of £40,000 from its International Emergency Fund. The money will be immediately available to fund operations, buy medical equipment, and offer counselling for all those affected.

In the future, any remaining funds will be used by educational organisations and other non-governmental groups to help the people of Beslan to rebuild their community.

The Beslan Lifeline Appeal was established by CAF Russia in response to corporate and individual donors in the country who wanted to provide support for the Beslan people.

CAF Charity Account holders can make donations online at www.allaboutgiving.org and debit or credit card donations can be made online at www.givenow.org or via telephone number 01732 520 111.

CAF is also helping companies to set up and run their own campaign to support the Beslan Lifeline Appeal. Kuljeet Jagdev in CAF Corporate Services has further details at 020 7400 2300.

The Sun newspaper has also launched an appeal to help the survivors of the Beslan school siege. It raised £70,000 on the first day from corporate sponsors alone, and the newspaper itself donated £10,000.
