Sense to use SMS for fundraising for first time

The charity that supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind will be encouraging spectators at this month’s London Marathon to make a donation on the day using SMS.

Sense will be publicising the initiative on the vests of all of its 650 runners, as well as on banners at supporter points on the course. Sponge, the mobile applications solutions company, has worked with Sense to set up the system.

By texting the word ‘run’ to 88100, supporters and viewers can donate to Sense. Texts cost £1.50 per text plus the standard text rate. Sense will receive 88p per text.

Paul Amadi, Director of Fundraising at Sense, said: “SMS is a mechanism that is appropriate for an event like the marathon – where Sense will have a big presence but where there is inevitably a limited opportunity for people to give – it’s about getting an instant reaction on the day, and SMS is the perfect vehicle for this.”

Sense is an official charity of this year’s marathon which will be held on 18 April 2004.
