The Guardian’s Christmas Charity Appeal focuses on Domestic Violence

New Philanthropy Capital is delighted to announce that the Guardian’s 2003 Christmas Charity Appeal is focusing on domestic violence charities in the UK. Money raised in the UK appeal will be distributed amongst nine organisations making genuine progress in the fight against domestic violence against women. Each of these charities has been independently assessed and recommended by NPC.
The appeal draws on NPC’s research report “Charity Begins at Home: Domestic Violence: A Guide for Donors and grant-makers” which identified domestic violence as an area in which charities are under-funded, and where the statutory response, although improving, is inadequate and thus the role of charities is essential.
The Guardian’s decision to address a whole area of social need rather than one specific charity is an innovative approach which aims to give donors the opportunity to support a range of organisations, many of which have neither the fund-raising resources nor the national profile to access funds from the public, and which are therefore reliant on other sources such as grant-making trusts.

World AIDS Day
Today (1st December) is World AIDS Day. There are around 45 million people worldwide infected with HIV. Over 10% of them live in South Africa.
The South African Government, after much feet dragging, has unveiled a plan to roll out universal anti-retroviral treatment over five years. While this is good news, there is still an imperative role for philanthropists. NPC estimate that, despite this plan, over 1 million South Africans will die of AIDS before the treatment plan reaches universal coverage in 2008.
NPC published a comprehensive guide for donors on HIV/AIDS in South Africa – “Rhetoric to Action” – in August 2003. Attached is an NPC update which details the Government’s new plans and provides donors with funding recommendations on some highly effective charities that are tackling AIDS on the ground. These include: organisations providing a bridgehead and facilitating advocacy to speed the roll out of government funding; projects providing orphan support and palliative care to those who miss out on the treatment plan; charities involved in the prevention of HIV.
