Mal Treharne is the new Managing Director at the Rural Regeneration Unit (RRU), the offshoot of the Countryside Alliance that is dedicated to finding practical solutions to challenges facing rural economies and society.

He will take up the post at the RRU’s Strategic IT Centre at Hagley in the West Midlands on 1 November 2003.

Mal has been with the RRU since its inception 12 months ago and takes over following the untimely death of the founding managing director Richard Ovenstone at the end of the summer.

Mal has combined a successful commercial career with that as an elected county council leader and member of the council of Europe, where he developed a reputation as a strong advocate for rural communities.

On his appointment, Mal said: “Many people find it difficult to locate the many funders and providers who are charged with the responsibility of helping them, the RRU is a player and not a pundit, and it will be our task to simplify and shorten the route to solutions for many who are already busy just trying to keep going.”
