RNIB brings first case against 'inaccessible' Web site

Howard Lake | 3 July 2003 | News

The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) is bringing the first case under the Disability Discrimination Act against a Web site that is allegedly inaccessible to peopel with visual impairments.

The RNIB will not say which company it is tackling, but the charity has several cases that it is pursuing. Most involve supporting individuals in their claims of discrimination against Web site publishers.

Case law on Web accessibility in the UK is seemingly non-existent so any precedent that RNIB can achieve will be welcomed by many in the Web design industry. It will also of course help charities themselves in benchmarking their Web sites’ accessibility features.
