The manager of Manchester United is to be the major public figure backing the charity’s 2003 campaign.

In 2002 the charity delivered over 1 million shoeboxes filled with gifts from the UK and Ireland to children in countries devastated by war, poverty or natural disasters. Shoeboxes were donated by around 11,000 schools, one third of the UK total, together with 4,000 churches and many other organisations and individuals.

Speaking of his involvement with the Christian international relief charity, Sir Alex Ferguson said: “I am very pleased to be involved with Operation Christmas Child’s 2003 Shoebox Appeal. It is a very practical way of bringing some happiness into the lives of needy children in many countries, particularly in the Balkans and Eastern Europe.”
