Gift Aid and covenant giving up 13% in two years

Howard Lake | 1 April 2003 | News

Tax-effective donations to charity through Gift Aid and covenants now total £2 billion, according to a report out today from Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).

Based on figures from the Inland Revenue, CAF has calculated that giving through these methods grew by 13% between 2000 and 2002. The Gift Aid system was radically simplified in the 2000 Budget.

According to the report’s author, Dr Catherine Walker: “Tax-effective donations now represent almost one third of all giving. In time, and as the conditions for giving improve, charities will undoubtedly be able to realise the potential of this new favourable tax framework more fully.”
