New association for board members

Newcastle upon Tyne company Governance Works has launched a new association dedicated to the needs and interests of Board Members.

The Board Member Association will help trustees, board members and committee members of non-for-profit distributing organisations such as voluntary or community associations, charities, regeneration partnerships, school and health trusts.

Rhona Howarth, Co-Director of Governance Works says: “The Association will help board members from different organisations share experiences, exchange information and become more effective in their role. Workers in organisations are often members of a professional body or a trades union from this they gain support and direct services for their role. Not so for board members. Board members need to be seen as an asset and given the assistance they need to carry out their role.”

Christine Morrison, Co-Director of Governance Works says: “The Association is exclusively for board members. Members will identify issues that affect the development of good governance practice and devise an agenda to match. The Association will be a voice ­ representing the needs and interests of board members to external agencies, funders and governments.”

Governance Works will develop the Board Association to offer a service that will bring board members together, providing technical support, and help in combating the isolation commonly experienced by board members.
