BT makes profit out of Comic Relief

British Telecom has admitted that it has done rather well out of Comic Relief’s use of premium rate telephone numbers for fundraising. Celebrity Big Brother alone made around £720,000, of which £280,000 (pre-VAT) will be kept by BT.

However, BT made clear that it is prevented from donating its services to any organisation, even a charity, under the terms of the company’s licence with telephone regulator Oftel.

Read BT says it has to cash in on Comic Relief by Jamie Wilson at SocietyGuardian, and the Guardian’s leader on the subject, Red faces over red noses.
