How many domain names does an organisation need to register to protect its brand online?

According to domain name registrar NetNames, the BBC has reportedly registered around 3,000 domain names over the last few years. This is estimated to have cost the corporation more than half a million pounds.

The domain names are the standard country level variants of BBC.com plus the names of TV and radio shows.
