General Motors creates charity directory site

Howard Lake | 23 December 2000 | News

General Motors (GM), the largest company in the world, has created Webhands.org, a site that aims to link would-be donors and volunteers with appropriate charities in the USA. “WebHands.org is one-stop shopping on the Internet to find and link with an organization that needs help,” said Rod Gillum, GM vice president for corporate relations and diversity and GM Foundation chairman.

While it is encouraging to see major companies funding sector infrastructure sites such as this, it is a shame that GM’s site emulates existing online services such as Guidestar, and doesn’t appear to break new ground. Indeed, it lists only 2000 non-profit organisations, a fraction of the number listed at Guidestar.
