META tags ignored extensively

Howard Lake | 23 August 1998 | News

META tags, the descriptive coding on Web pages that enhance search directory ranking, are being ignored by many Web sites. According to a Sitemetrics survey, only 30% of Web sites make use of META tags.

SiteMetrics looked at 40,000 commercial Web sites and found that 30% used the META keywords tag and 27% used the META description tag. This represented no improvement on the figures found in their last survey.

A further 31% of description tags were longer than the accepted length.
