Payroll giving

Charities Aid Foundation launched their new Give As You Earn Web site at www.giveasyouearn.org on 2 July 1998 to promote and handle payroll giving donations.

Give As You Earn, operated by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), allows employees to make regular, monthly donations direct from their pay, tax free. The site explains how the scheme works, demonstrating the benefits to donors, to companies and to charities.

The site offers a range of materials for charities and individuals, such as forms, posters and sample promotion material. All of these can be downloaded and used to announce and promote the scheme to new donors, or to contact existing ones thanking them for their support.

The scheme is straightforward for companies to set up. Companies can download a set of Word files to explain how GAYE can be implemented by payroll and human resource departments. Companies can sign up to Give As You Earn online.

One of the practical interactive aspects of the site is a calculator that allows companies and individuals to work out the potential amount of money that can be raised for charities if they use the scheme, and how much such a tax-efficient donation would actually cost them. Even if your employer has not yet contracted to the scheme, individuals can still use the site to register their interest; a Give As You Earn Advisers will the contact their employer on their behalf.

The site features numerous case studies, a regularly updated news service, and a community section allowing visitors to exchange ideas and information.

The new site follows on from the successful introduction of CAF’s CharityCard site in May. CAF’s development of such Internet services are playing a valuable role in developing the online infrastructure of the UK voluntary sector.
