BGC Charity Day raises $12m through trading

Howard Lake | 12 September 2012 | News

BGC Charity Day, the annual fundraising event by brokerage company BGC Partners and its affiliate Cantor Fitzgerald, has raised an estimated $12 million for charities around the world. Celebrities and traders at the company’s offices around the world, including London, New York, Hong Kong and Paris, raised the sum by making trades, with all proceeds being donated to charity.
The event was originally set up to raise funds for the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, after 658 of its employees were killed in the attacks of 11 September 2001 in New York. Since then though the fundraising has expanded to benefit other causes.
Participating celebrities included actress Rosamund Pike, actor Roger Moore, Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah, tennis player John McEnroe, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Each was raising funds for their own favourite charity.
UK charities that will benefit include Asthma UK, Haven House children’s hospice, Help a London Child, Variety, Barnardo’s, and Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.
