CIOF launches monthly public giving tracker

The Chartered Institute of Fundraising (CIOF) has partnered with CharityTracker to launch a new monthly tracker measuring how often people in the UK are asked to give to charity, and through which channels.

CharityTracker surveys a nationally representative sample of 4,000 UK adults every month. Respondents will now also be asked whether they have been asked to donate to charity in the last four weeks, and through which of a range of channels, including specific fundraising methods, workplace giving, and requests from friends and family.

The partnership responds to a fall in the amount donated by the British public in 2025, the first decline in five years according to the CAF UK Giving Report 2026, at a time when the cost-of-living crisis continues to put pressure on both public generosity and charity fundraising budgets.

Results for the tracker’s first month, August 2026, have been published on the CIOF website. The Chartered Institute says tracking responses over time will help it identify trends in fundraising activity, establish a benchmark, and highlight where fundraising approaches are reaching supporters effectively and where gaps exist.

The initiative supports the “fostering a culture that inspires more people to give” pillar of the CIOF’s ten-year strategy, launched in January 2026, which aims to challenge barriers and misconceptions that prevent people from giving.

CharityTracker is a monthly tracking service exploring UK public attitudes and behaviour towards charities, giving CIOF members access to self-serve dashboards and strategic analysis on brand performance and wider social trends.

Rob Cope, executive director of membership and operations at the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, said: “It’s fantastic to have an organisation like CharityTracker join us as an official partner. We’ll work with them to gauge public awareness and perception of fundraising, using the data they share with us to identify trends and any gaps where changes or improvements could be made.”

Anna Turner, head of research and insight at CharityTracker, said the monthly data would provide “an invaluable new source of intelligence to inform future fundraising” for the sector.
