Hang on to your hangers and benefit UNICEF, says M&S
Marks & Spencer is encouraging shoppers not to take hangers home with them when they buy clothes by offering to donate 57p for each box of hangers recycled to children’s charity UNICEF. An average box contains 162 hangers.
The partnership aims to raise at least £1.9 million over three years to fund clean water, education and health care for children in two locations in the Mymensingh and Dhaka regions of Bangladesh.
Marc Bolland, Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer said: “Just one box of hangers can provide a child with clean water for a fortnight. We believe our UNICEF partnership can make a big difference to families and communities in Bangladesh.”
In 2010 M&S collected 152 million clothes hangers. This year it is hoping to increase that by 50 million.
M&S has run a series of fundraising partnerships with charities based around the theme of recycling, which reinforces its Plan A commitments to “combat climate change, reduce waste, use sustainable raw materials, trade ethically, and help our customers to lead healthier lifestyles”.
